Flying first class was always my dream…
…till it actually came true.
I flew first class for free from New Zealand all the way to Singapore
What’s even crazier is, I didn’t pay for this trip.
That’s right. This luxury air ride from New Zealand to Singapore didn’t cost me a single penny, making the experience even more priceless.
(I know you’re at the edge of your seat waiting for me reveal how I did it. And don’t worry, we’ll get there in a minute. I want to show you something first)
Some people will look at this and think, “Oh, Sarah is rich. Of course she’s able to fly first class.” But what they don’t realise is, there’s a much sneakier way rich people fly first class ⸺ that even though they could afford to fly first class ⸺ allows them to save a huge chunk of cash each plane ride they catch.
I want to show you how.
But, before I do, it still fascinates me just how much it costs to fly first class. Let’s quickly break down how much my flight to Singapore would’ve cost me in cash.
Breakdown of my flight cost
Take a look at this. If I wanted to fly from my home city, Christchurch, to New York one way in economy flying Qantas which is currently running a sale, it would cost me $1,266 NZ dollars.
But if I wanted to fly in Business Class, it would cost me $5,141 – that is 4x the price of economy!
But what about First Class?! Well, it would cost me a cool $9,141 – that is 7x the price!
For many people, that would be ⅓ to ½ of their WHOLE annual income. All for just ONE plane ticket! Who’s paying for this?
That was until I became one of those “people” myself. Now, yes, sometimes I do buy my airfares with cash. But often, I do it either for free or heavily discounted. And here’s how people like me do it.
The “magic” credit card
It’s not a secret the word ‘credit card’ pisses a lot of people off.
But in truth, using a credit card responsibly can open a whole new world of benefits and perks.
Like my favourite: Flight points.
If you can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a credit card that gives you lots of rewards, then you can accrue huge amounts of miles. This is what you call “credit card churning.”
And it’s true that if you sign up for credit cards, you can get some really good signup bonuses without spending a lot of money.
But these are one-off bonuses and you can only have a limited number of cards. To be flying Business and First Class all the time, rather than just sometimes, you need to spend money.
The problem is that most people don’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend, right?
So, the secret here, is you need to be able to have a way to spend LOTS AND LOTS of money on the credit card, without actually “losing” that money or “spending” it in the traditional way. And there’s no better way of doing this other than building a business.
How? Let’s say you wanted to fly from New York to Singapore.
(This might get a little technical…)
Well, normally if you booked this flight with cash it would cost you $10,759.72. (Yeah, we don’t really want to pay that)
Luckily, if you book ahead, a Saver Award ticket will cost you 120,000 Miles with the Singapore Airlines program, Kris Flyer.
Well, the best credit card to get to accrue these miles is the American Express Explorer Card – so we’d get one of those.
Every time you spend $1 with this card, you earn 2 AMEX points – the American Express rewards program. These can be transferred to Singapore Airline’s frequent flyer program, Kris Flyer.
2 AMEX points will get you 1.5 Singapore Kris flyer miles. So that means that if we spend $80,000 on our American Explorer Card, we’ll get 160,000 AMEX points, which if we transferred to Singapore Airlines, would be 120,000 Miles.
Which is what we need to fly in First Class for FREE.
But of course, $80,000 is a lot of money. It’s more than what most people earn in just 1 year. How the hell are you going to spend $80k out of your own pocket?
This is where building a business comes in. With a business, you can spend money to make money back.
(By the way, I’ll also show you your business can actually be making no profit at all, yet still allows you to fly first class)
For example, the main business model that we teach on this channel is something called Aliexpress Dropshipping.
With dropshipping, you first set up an online store using the easiest, most beginner friendly platform Shopify – which can you pay for with your credit card.
Next, you list products for sale in your Shopify store. Where do you find your products? You find them on a website called Aliexpress.
For example, take these nifty cat coffee spoons here.
They are selling for just $1.37 on Aliexpress. Your job is to list them in your store for a mark-up price, which you can do, because the products are already super cheap.
Then, you advertise these products using Facebook Ads to bring in traffic and customers to your store. And guess what? You pay for your ads with your credit card. Using paid ads to generate sales is probably the EASIEST way I spend money to make money.
Then when a customer comes to your store to buy your product, you then go to Aliexpress and order the item for the customer and get Aliexpress to ship it directly to the customer. And guess what? You pay for it with your credit card.
But yes: Credit card rewards are one of the best hidden bonuses of running a business.
In fact, we had the founders of The Wholesale Formula, Dan & Eric, run 2 webinars for our subscribers where they showed us how they buy wholesale products and resell them on Amazon for a profit.
In one of their webinars, they explained that they use their credit card to buy most of their products. Instead of travel rewards, they opt for cash back. Last year, they got over $50,000 in cash back rewards ALONE.
As they pointed out, even if their business didn’t make any profit, they’d still make MORE money than what the average American earns each year, just in credit card cash back rewards alone.
Though I must point out as a travel lover that if they’d instead chosen to get flight rewards, they could have earned over 5 million AMEX points. Which could be turned into 3,750,000 miles with Singapore Airline. Which could have been redeemed for 15 return First Class flights from New York to Singapore! (Crazy right?)
And that’s the thing. It’s true that I expect most business owners flying at the front of the plane to be making a profit, but even if they weren’t, they could still be flying first class.
As we’ve shown on this channel, you can scale Aliexpress stores to over $10,000 a month to MILLIONS of dollars a year. But a question we often get asked is this: “Those stores might be generating over $10,000 a month in revenue – but how much of those dollars is profit?”
Well, that’s a good question. Are they really making profit? Well, the answer is usually the profit margins are anywhere from 20-25%. But y’know, let’s say you sucked at dropshipping, and you were making no profit from a store generating $10,000 a month in revenue. What then?
Well, that would mean that the $10,000 a month we’re earning is being spent on expenses, which as we’ve shown with Aliexpress dropshipping, are all paid for with a credit card.
If we’re spending $10,000 a month on our credit card, that means we’re earning 20,000 membership points with the American Express Program, AMEX. And if we transfer those to Singapore Airlines, we’d be earning 15,000 miles with them each month.
Over a year, that would be 180,000 points. And 180,000 points gets us 1 ½ first class flights from New York to Singapore – the equivalent of over $16,000 in FREE premium flights.
Here is the reality. When you go to a job, you spend your time to make money… but no one gives you extra rewards for doing that.
The reality is: When you go to a job, you spend your time to make money – but get zero reward for this. But with a business, you focus on spending your MONEY to make money instead. And this DOES get rewarded. It gets rewarded with free travel around the world!
But before you can afford first class, you have to build the engine behind that makes it possible: a business.
